Baliem Valley

The Valley was discovered by a botanical and zoological expeditions group in 1938, who reported that this 1,600 m high valley appeared to be inhabited by a lost civilization. The Baliem Valley received worldwide
publicity in the wartime 1945 when a Dutch plane crashed. An American nurse who survived the crash called the valley "Shangri-La". The first outsiders to settle here were missionaries landing by floatplane on the Baliem River in 1954. The valley has magnificent scenery and unlimited tourist potential.

Wamena

This small town, capital of the Jaya Wijaya regency, is surrounded by cloud-covered mountain peaks, with rows of mission offices, government offices, schools and a traditional market.
The market is one of the town's tourist attractions. Stone axes, ax blades, sekan (hand-woven rattan bracelets) noken (string bag made from rolled bark fibers) and Koteka are offered for sale by the natives. Wamena can only be reached by plane, about one-hour flight from Jayapura, capital of Irian Jaya province.

Koteka

This yellow penis sheath is made from the outer rinds of a pumpkin like fruit. Dani boys and men wear no clothing except for the Koteka
