Kalimantan is one of Indonesia's Provinces on Kalimantan Island.
Entirely within the tropics, it lies on the equator between
with temperatures from 18C up to 36C in the lowland and 10C
up to 23C in the mountain areas. The total land area is 37,000
square kilometers, crossed by many big and small rivers and,
that's why it's called "The Island of Thousand Rivers". The
rivers have dominant means of transportation and commercial
activities, although roads and motor ways are also built linking
towns and villages. The land is inhabited by approximately 2,5
million people, 90% of the population are Moslem, the others
are Christians, Buddhists and other believers. Banjarmasin is
the Capital of South Kalimantan province.
South Kalimantan has many special interest places for visitors
: THE BARITO FLOATING MARKET, will give you enjoyable trips
cruising the Martapura and Barito rivers. You can see how the

motor boat (Kelotok) see the biggest floating market in Kuin, taste
local snacks and drinks are a floating restaurant. Eat rice cakes,
fried bananas or try a delicious local soup.
MARTAPURA DIAMOND MINING, where the people try their luck in deep
holes, digging through gravel and sand then wash the soil in search
of diamond which is called Galuh. Next, the galuh is cut, polished
and faceted to become Berlian ready for use as jewellery.
THE BORNEO BEKANTAN, a special animal, you will not find in other
places. The rare monkeys species or Bekantan has very long nose, inhabit
an island near the mouth of the river Barito and can be reached by
speed boat from a short distance. Besides above objects, South Borneo
has many trip destinations, mainly for the Adventurous Travellers
where modern facilities may not always be available. One of them is
Loksado, about 174 km north from Banjarmasin, the place where the
Dayak Tribes live in their traditional way. Entering into the jungle
of tropical rain forest, spending the nights with the Dayak tribes
in their Longhouse, some time you will trek on the hills, cross the
rivers, follow the paths, then take a Dayak bamboo raft along the
river guided by trained and experiences Dayak people maneuvering downstream
for the next destination and return to town. |
